The paper generalizes and systematizes the data available in the literature on pharmacognostic study (botanical characteristics, geographical distribution, and chemical composition) and ethnopharmacological features of using the plants of the genus Aristolochia in folk medicine in the world. The main components are shown to be aristolochic acid, the alkaloid aristolochine, and essential oil. Attention is drawn to the specific toxic action of aristolochic acid that has a negative effect on the kidney. The authors consider prospects for comprehensively studying and elaborating approaches to standardizing the raw material of European birthwort distributed on the territory of the Russian Federation. A deeper study of the raw material of European birthwort will be able to expand the range of raw material sources for domestic phytopreparations.
