DETERMINATION OF THE TOTAL CONTENT OF ANTHRACENE DERIVATIVES IN BUCKTHORN (FRANGULA) TABLETS

The paper provides evidence for the novel approaches to standardizing alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus Mill.) bark-based drugs, which are to determine the total content of anthracene derivatives by direct spectrophotometry without prior acid hydrolysis of anthraglycosides. The authors propose to calculate the amount of anthracene derivatives with reference to frangulin A that is the dominant anthraglycoside of the raw material and preparations of this plant. A procedure has been developed to determine the total content of anthracene derivatives in buckthorn extract coated tablets 0.2 g. It involves extracting the sum of anthracene derivatives from the tablets with 40% ethanol and determining the content of this group of biologically active compounds by direct spectrophotometry with reference to frangulin A in alkaline-ammonia medium at an analytical wavelength of 524 nm. The total content of anthracene derivatives per tablet varies from 16.85±0.45 to 23.21±0.64 mg. The error of single determination of the total content of anthracene derivatives in the buckthorn tablets with a 95% significant probability is ±4.01%.
