ROWAN (SORBUS AUCUPARIA L.): DETERMINATION OF ANTOCYANS IN THE BERRIES

Alcoholic extract from rowan (Sorbus aucuparia L.) and its derived polyphenols stimulate a humoral and cell-mediated immune response and nonspecific resistance of the body. They increase the production of antibodies and the phagocytic and bactericidal activities of immunocompetent cells and are as effective as Echinacea purpurea tincture. This property is attributable to the presence of proantocyanidins that have antioxidant, immunotropic, anti-inflammatory, and capillary-strengthening activities. A procedure has been developed to quantify the total count of antocyans calculated with reference to cyanidin-3-O-glucoside in the rowan berries by direct spectrophotometry.
