There are published data on the medical use of mulleins (Verbascum) and on their effects on the blood coagulation system. However, there is a paucity of experimental evidence confirming the hemostatic properties of Verbascum genus plants. Aqueous and alcoholic extracts from the vegetative and generative organs of common mullein (Verbascum Thapsus L.) and dense-flowered mullein (Verbascum densiflorum Berfol.) at a concentration of 1 mg/ml have experimentally shown to exert an anticoagulant effect. The extracts of mulleins increase blood clotting time as compared to the control; however, none of them exceeds the anticoagulant activity of heparin. It has been ascertained that the extracts obtained from different plant parts vary in pharmacological activity. It has been also found that the aqueous extracts are more active than the alcoholic ones.
