Skin injuries rank second among the main classes of diseases. Impaired integrity of the upper skin layers is frequently complicated by infection. Pharmacotherapy for skin wounds encompasses different drugs and formulations (antiseptics, antimicrobials, reparative, antioxidant, and angioprotective agents, and vitamins); ointments are the most common dosage forms. Powders or dusting powders occupy a small segment in the pharmaceutical market although they have a number of advantages over ointments. The application of maltodextrin-based multifunctional biodegradable dusting powders having a high sorbing capacity is a promising area in the design of novel formulations for the treatment of injuries to the skin and adjacent tissues.
